hey what’s up?this is Chris here near comic con talking about Black Sails.
now you guys had your panels last night, what was the reception like here?
it was great.um…i m,i think …
you know the hope was that we could tell the story
that would be surprising and in its tone and the approach to the world
and people seem to be responding to it,so its exciting.
awesome.so let’s set the stage what era of pirates you know ,
what part of the history are we talking about?
it’s the 1710s in around Nassau on the Bahamas
where the pirate problem got so severe that the English pulled the flag down
and left and so they were left to their own devices so it’s a frontier story .
um…it’s a story about these people who kinda have to
rely on each other to figure out a way to survive it.
so total lawlessness or did they sort of make their own society ?
em er they survived somehow for a while so it could have been totally lawless
but i mean there’s nobody,yeah there’s no authority,
the only thing holding it together is themselves.you know and either restraint
or fear or you know whatever it took to…
and economic reality as well.i mean you know they had to make money,
they had to fence their goods.
so thus (xx xx)is like the economic harbor of this island,
so that kind of creates some kind of control of these people.
so em tell me a little bit about your character.
what you play and so like your you know you don’t have to tell me,
the whole course but like what your path is?
ok so i play Captain Flint,he is the captain of the 【xx】.
and ,when we meet him at the beginning of the first episode,
he has historically been the biggest ternal on the island.
and he has this fearsome reputation ,him and his crew.
but he has had a following period of his crew all beginning to doubt him.
and there’s a character on board the ship who is vine to become captain,
this captaincy was democracy, they were elected captain.
if you want to come up to the goods, then the crew would boo you out,
and they votes somebody else on.so we meet him on the back foot,
trying to deal with the situation, political situation on this boat.
and at the same time he is aiming to trying
get the Spainish treasure bullion of this spainish ship.
but he is gotta track down this ship.
that is his kinda super objective is to get that treasure.
so that he’ll have enough money to actully make the island of Nassau
an independent place that can protect itself.
why do you think right now is the time to talk about pirates?
why is it the perfect time for the series?
em they’ve never really gone away.
i mean i think there’s been so many different adorations of them
but i think it’s really just in the last couple of years
that you can make the show technically, financially.
and the visual effects are good enough and fast and cheap enough
to be able to create this world.to be able to create…
you know…a place in history that doesn’t exist anymore.
A lot of stuff I’ve seen in the trailers makes it look very practical,
so how much was the mix like practical in CG?
it’s um… well hopefully it’be totally seamless for audience.
when i see 7 out of the 8 episodes
and at times i had to pinch myself
because I was like where’s this joining up?
because i really can’t tell.and that’s just great.
because it delivers visually,it creates this whole world
that the audience can believe in and they can lose thmeselves in.
I mean it also gives it a kinda scope in epic quality,
where it delivers the kind of,
you know the adventurous aspect of this thing.
at the same time, you know it is centered around these real human beings,
these charaters, and a story that you wanna watch,
you wanna find out what happens to these people.
there’s other scripted pirate shows happening spontaneously.
how important is it that you are on cable and you’re able to show more?
i mean, i think when we um,when the show started into development,
there were even more than there are now.
i think at a certain point you just have to
hope you’re telling the best story you can tell,
and if the show works, hopefully the audience will find it,
and if doesn’t, then it doesn’t really matter what else anybody’s doing ,so.
Well, I’ll be watching. Thanks a lot for talking,
and keep it locked on IGN for more on NewYork Comic Con.
